A viral accusation explodes online — likely fueled by AI

Jan. 2, 2026 U.S. — A viral post first published on Friday by a Reddit user claiming fraud and theft by an unnamed food delivery company appears to be an AI-generated ruse that spread across the internet faster than it could be refuted. In the post, the user stated they were a developer for a major food delivery app, that the priority fee and driver benefit fee went 100% to the company, and claimed the driver saw zero dollars. The Reddit post received more than 87,000 upvotes and millions of impressions on other social media sites, where people shared screenshots before it was removed by Reddit moderators last Tuesday. As reporters worked to substantiate the claims, the Reddit post continued to garner massive numbers of responses until it was found to likely have been generated by AI.
