A video comparing grocery costs before and after a new U.S. tariff on Canada found little difference in the price of a sample dinner. The tariff, signed into law July 20, imposes a 50% duty on select Canadian imports including dairy, autos, and alcohol, according to the segment. Everyday grocery items like maple syrup, pork, potatoes, and butter were not among the targeted goods.
In the video, the chef initially assumed the tariff would cut the dinner plate roughly in half, demonstrating with a smaller portion. After learning the tariff excludes most groceries, the full-sized plate was shown again, appearing nearly identical to the original.
The demonstration highlights how tariffs aimed at specific industries may not significantly affect grocery bills for consumers who shop outside those categories. The chef concluded that for this type of meal, prices before and after the tariff should stay about the same.
