January 26, 2026 — A major winter storm, known as Winter Storm Fern, has battered much of the U.S. from the South through the Northeast, beginning over the weekend and continuing into Monday.

Snow, sleet, freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures have sprawled across the country and have led to at least 25 deaths across multiple states from hyperthermia, traffic accidents, and winter-related incidents, according to officials.

Hundreds of thousands have been impacted by power outages, with ice and heavy snow bringing down trees and power lines. Historic flight disruptions led to thousands of cancellations and delays at major hubs in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., reportedly the highest totals since the pandemic.
