Code Oscar, man overboard.
Child overboard, port side.
I was on deck 7.
Hadn't even taken a sip of my coffee when the call came in.
I ran up the deck stairs.
I remember the stillness, like the ship itself was holding its breath.
They said she'd fallen from the 4th deck.
She was just a kid.
Then her dad jumped.
No vest, no hesitation, straight into open sea.
Strong current, 3foot shock.
They're drifting fast, still afloat, no gear.
Rescue vessel 5 minutes out.
Keep eyes on it.
Don't lose that light.
He was slipping, but he kept her head above the water the whole time.
There!
Grab the line.
We got you.
Most people don't survive that kind of fall, but that day they both did, and for those of us who witnessed it, we call it a miracle.
