Ohio nonprofit brings dignity to the unhoused

January 24, 26 Akron, Ohio —

Robert Ford, founder of Forever R Children, a non-profit that reaches out to the unhoused and marginalized in Ohio, knows all too well what it’s like to feel unseen — not to have a permanent place to live, not to have access to a shower, not to feel human. Today, Forever R Children operates as a one-stop shop for people experiencing homelessness. Ford runs mobile shower buses equipped with two large showers, two full-sized sinks and two toilets. “I wanted people to get in there and relax,” he says. “Have a seat. Have a moment of respite. We got you while you’re here.” Those who visit receive more than a shower — they can get clean clothes, haircuts, cell phones, bus passes, and access to medical and mental health care through partnerships with nurses and a grief recovery specialist. Ford plans to expand and is in talks to have a laundry bus and a grocery store bus to accommodate those in need.
